Woman in hospital after near-drowning at popular beach

A 38-year-old woman remains in a serious condition in hospital after being pulled unconscious from the water at a popular beach south of Adelaide.

The woman was swimming at Aldinga Beach when she ran into trouble at around 7.30pm yesterday.

A nearby swimmer noticed the woman struggling and dragged her from the water, with an off-duty paramedic then rushing to her aid.

“The poor young lady was like, face down in the water and obviously a whole lot of people saw her and got to her aid and pulled her back onto the beach and it was looking pretty grim,” one witness said.

“He went down and just started working on her and the response from the emergency services was just fantastic.”

The paramedic performed CPR until ambulance crews arrived, with the woman then airlifted to the Flinders Medical Centre.

The woman is in a serious but stable condition in hospital. (9news)

The incident comes just a week after Nepalese nursing student Nischal Ghimire drowned at Glenelg North.
