First Aid Techniques – HLTAID003 Provide First Aid

Learning basic first aid techniques can help you cope with an emergency. You may be able to keep a person breathing, reduce their pain or minimise the consequences of injury or sudden illness until an ambulance arrives. This could mean the difference between life and death for them.

It is a good idea to take a first aid course so that you can recognise an emergency and give basic first aid until professional help arrives.
Learn the first aid method of DRSABCD
First aid is as easy as ABC – airway, breathing and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). In any situation, apply the DRSABCD Action Plan.

DRSABCD stands for:
Danger – always check the danger to you, any bystanders and then the injured or ill person. Make sure you do not put yourself in danger when going to the assistance of another person.
Response – is the person conscious? Do they respond when you talk to them, touch their hands or squeeze their shoulder?
Send for help – call triple zero (000). Don’t forget to answer the questions asked by the operator.
Airway – Is the person’s airway clear? Is the person breathing?
If the person is responding, they are conscious and their airway is clear, assess how you can help them with any injury.
If the person is not responding and they are unconscious, you need to check their airway by opening their mouth and having a look inside. If their mouth is clear, tilt their head gently back (by lifting their chin) and check for breathing. If the mouth is not clear, place the person on their side, open their mouth and clear the contents, then tilt the head back and check for breathing.
Breathing – check for breathing by looking for chest movements (up and down). Listen by putting your ear near to their mouth and nose. Feel for breathing by putting your hand on the lower part of their chest. If the person is unconscious but breathing, turn them onto their side, carefully ensuring that you keep their head, neck and spine in alignment. Monitor their breathing until you hand over to the ambulance officers.
CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) – if an adult is unconscious and not breathing, make sure they are flat on their back and then place the heel of one hand in the centre of their chest and your other hand on top. Press down firmly and smoothly (compressing to one third of their chest depth) 30 times. Give two breaths. To get the breath in, tilt their head back gently by lifting their chin. Pinch their nostrils closed, place your open mouth firmly over their open mouth and blow firmly into their mouth. Keep going with the 30 compressions and two breaths at the speed of approximately five repeats in two minutes until you hand over to the ambulance officers or another trained person, or until the person you are resuscitating responds. The method for CPR for children under eight and babies is very similar and you can learn these skills in a CPR course.
Defibrillator – for unconscious adults who are not breathing, apply an automated external defibrillator (AED) if one is available. They are available in many public places, clubs and organisations. An AED is a machine that delivers an electrical shock to cancel any irregular heart beat (arrhythmia), in an effort get the normal heart beating to re-establish itself. The devices are very simple to operate. Just follow the instructions and pictures on the machine, and on the package of the pads, as well as the voice prompts. If the person responds to defibrillation, turn them onto their side and tilt their head to maintain their airway. Some AEDs may not be suitable for children.

ACECQA today announced that 94% of all children’s education and care services approved under the National Quality Framework (NQF) have received a quality rating, with 77% rated at ‘Meeting National Quality Standard’ (NQS) or above (as at 31 December 2017).

“In the last five years, the proportion of services rated at ‘Meeting NQS’ or above has risen from 59% to 65%, 69%, 72% and now 77%”, said ACECQA CEO Gabrielle Sinclair.

“Continuous quality improvement is one of the core objectives of the National Quality Framework. It is very pleasing to see this year-on-year improvement in service quality”, added Ms Sinclair.

Key findings from ACECQA’s NQF Snapshot include:

94% (14,687) of approved education and care services have a quality rating
77% (11,253) of rated services have an overall quality rating of ‘Meeting NQS’ or above
40% (1373) of services rated at ‘Working Towards NQS’ do not meet five or fewer of the 58 elements of quality
3776 quality rating reassessments have been completed
Of the 2700 reassessments of services rated ‘Working Towards NQS’, 68% (1827) resulted in a higher overall quality rating.

On 1 February 2018, a revised version of the NQS came into effect, which reduced the number of standards from 18 to 15, and the number of elements from 58 to 40. All education and care services will be quality assessed and rated against the revised NQS from 1 February onwards.

Accredited Childcare First Aid Training on the Northern Beaches, Sydney.

CHILDCARE workers with fraudulent first aid certificates are risking kids’ lives, the childcare watchdog has warned the federal government.

The Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) has blown the whistle on dodgy training colleges for handing out qualifications to incompetent students.

It says state childcare regulators have expressed fears that some childcare workers with first aid certificates have no idea of what to do in a medical emergency.

All staff in family daycare, and at least one carer in each long daycare centre, must be trained in first aid, anaphylaxis and asthma management.

“A situation where a student has completed one qualification and is incorrectly deemed competent, could present a serious and significant risk to children being educated and cared for,’’ ACECQA warns in a submission to the Department of Education and Training.

“A … failure of graduates to properly administer first aid to children in their care in times of emergency carries a high risk to children and could have life-threatening consequences.’’

ACECQA also criticises the poor English skills of some childcare workers and calls for mandatory literacy tests before students graduate.

It says childcare centres have complained about qualified staff who “do not possess the basic literacy skills expected of them’’.

The Australian Childcare Alliance (ACA) of private daycare centres also demanded the federal Education Department to take “bold action’’ against training colleges that fail to properly train staff.

“The very nature of the industry evolves around very young and, as such, vulnerable children who are reliant on the competency and skills of their educators,’’ it said.

NSW Early Childhood Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said the state government would “use the full extent of the law’’ to deal with dodgy childcare qualifications.

“Services and individuals that have submitted fraudulent documentation will be investigated and can be prosecuted,’’ she said.

An allergy, is an overreaction by the body’s immune system to a normally harmless substance. Substances that can trigger an allergic reaction are called allergens. Allergens may be in medication, in the environment (eg. pollens, grasses, moulds, dogs and cats), or proteins (most often) in the foods we eat. Individuals can have mild/moderate or severe allergies.

Allergies should not to be confused with an intolerance, which does not involve the immune system – see Food Intolerance.

In Australia allergies are very common. Around one in three people will develop allergies at some time during their life. The most common allergic conditions are food allergies, eczema, asthma and hay fever. Food allergy occurs in around ten percent of children¹ and approximately two percent of adults.

Having a food allergy means that when you eat a food containing that protein (allergen), the immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals, triggering symptoms that can affect a person’s breathing, stomach and gut, skin and/ or heart and blood pressure.

The same immune response occurs in drug allergy when a drug is ingested or injected and in insect allergy when a sting or bite occurs. There are also less common allergens that can also cause such an immune response.

For someone with a severe allergy, exposure to the allergen can cause a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis affects the whole body, often within minutes of exposure.

Signs of a mild to moderate allergic reaction are:

Swelling of the lips, face, eyes

Hives or welts

Tingling mouth

Abdominal pain, vomiting (these are signs of anaphylaxis for insect allergy)

Signs of anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) are:

Difficult/noisy breathing

Swelling of tongue

Swelling/tightness in throat

Wheeze/persistent cough

Difficulty talking and/or hoarse voice

Persistent dizziness or collapse

Pale and floppy (young children)

HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting

Information about the course

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants, children and adults.

The unit applies to educators and support staff working within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies. This unit of competency will contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulation (2011).

This unit of competency has been approved by ACECQA and meets the requirements of “First Aid, Asthma & Anaphylaxis”.

Important information regarding course durations:

Course durations, as mentioned above, are reflective of group sizes of between 4 and 15 participants. If there are less students in a group, you may find course duration reduced by a maximum of 10%. If a class size exceeds 15 participants it may therefore also be necessary to increase course duration depending on the number of participants.

Renewing first aid qualifications

ACECQA has updated its advice about renewing first aid qualifications. The information states the relevant regulation and includes Safe Work Australia’s Code of Practice recommendations. The following information is available as an FAQ on ACECQA’s website.

The Safe Work Australia First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice recommends that first aiders should attend training on a regular basis to refresh their first aid knowledge and skills, and to confirm their competence to provide first aid. The Code of Practice also recommends that refresher training in CPR should be undertaken annually and first aid qualifications should be renewed every three years.

Your certificate should state the date on which you completed the course, as well as the expiry date, which is typically three years from the date of completion. Your certificate may include additional requirements, such as completing refresher training in CPR annually.

Child Care Northern Beaches Sydney – First Aid course HLTAID004

NORTHERN beaches parents can check on the health and safety standards of childcare centres to find out which ones make the grade.

The Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority, which assesses childcare services nationwide, has released results for about one fifth of services on the peninsula.

While the majority have yet to be assessed, the ones that have been through the rigorous new benchmarks either meet or exceed the standard, with only a couple of the centres working towards meeting the national standard.

The new standards rank childcare services, which include long day care, outside school hours care, family day care and pre-schools, in seven quality areas education, health and safety, physical environment, staffing, relationships with children, partnerships with families and service management.

Allambie Heights Children’s Centre is meeting five of the seven standards and exceeding two.

Director Jo Owen said she was very pleased and proud of the centre.

“We have a range of equipment that meet the safety standards to cater for children aged two to five years and for all abilities.

“We also have policies in place as well as a maintenance checklist and daily safety checks of the playground.”

Mrs Owen said they followed the Staying Healthy in Childcare recommendations as well as implementing their own policies for managing illnesses.

(HLTAID004) What skills and knowledge will I get from this course?

Performance Evidence

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role.

There must be demonstrated evidence that the candidate has completed the following tasks at least once in line with state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, ARC guidelines and workplace procedures:

  • located and interpreted workplace policies and procedures
  • conducted a hazard assessment and identified strategies to minimise risk
  • demonstrated safe manual handling techniques
  • assessed airway, breathing and responsiveness of casualty

Performed at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant, a child and an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, demonstrating the following techniques on each:

  • checking for response and normal breathing
  • recognising abnormal breathing
  • opening and clearing the airway
  • using correct hand location, compression depth rate in line with the ARC recommended ratio of compressions and ventilations
  • acting in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
  • following single rescuer procedure, including the demonstration of a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions
  • followed prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Conducted a verbal secondary survey

Applied first aid procedures for the following:

  • allergic reactions
  • anaphylaxis
  • asthma
  • basic wound care
  • severe bleeding
  • burns
  • cardiac arrest
  • choking and airway obstruction
  • convulsions, including febrile convulsions
  • envenomation (using pressure immobilisation)
  • epilepsy and seizures
  • fractures, sprains and strains (using arm slings, roller bandages or other appropriate immobilisation techniques)
  • head injuries
  • poisoning
  • respiratory distress
  • shock

Followed workplace procedures for reporting details of the incident, including:

  • providing an accurate verbal report of the incident
  • completing an incident, injury, trauma and illness record
  • responded to at least three simulated first aid scenarios contextualised to the candidate’s workplace/community setting, and involving infants and children of varying ages.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

  • state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice and workplace procedures including:
  • ARC Guidelines for provision of CPR and first aid to infants, children and adults
  • guidelines from Australian national peak clinical bodies
  • safe work practices to minimise risks and potential hazards
  • first aid requirements for services under the Education and Care Services National Law

Infection control principles and procedures

Requirements for currency of skill and knowledge

Legal, workplace and community considerations, including:

  • need for stress-management techniques and available support following an emergency situation, including the psychological impact on children
  • duty of care requirements
  • respectful behaviour towards a casualty
  • own skills and limitations
  • consent, including situations in which parental/caregiver consent is required
  • privacy and confidentiality requirements
  • importance of debriefing

Considerations when providing first aid including:

  • airway obstruction due to body position
  • appropriate duration and cessation of CPR
  • appropriate use of an AED, including placement of pads for adults and children aged older than 8 years
  • specific considerations when using an AED on children aged between 1 and 8 years, including identification of AED with paediatric capability, paediatric voltage and use of paediatric pads
  • chain of survival
  • standard precautions and infection control

Principles and procedures for application of first aid in the following scenarios:

  • abdominal injuries
  • allergic reactions, including severe reactions
  • anaphylaxis
  • bleeding control
  • burns
  • cardiac conditions
  • choking and airway obstruction
  • cold and crush injuries
  • diabetes
  • dislocations
  • drowning
  • envenomation
  • environmental impact (including hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration and heat stroke)

  • absence of normal breathing
  • anatomy of the external chest
  • specific anatomy of infant respiratory systems, including trachea, and implications for provision of CPR
  • basic anatomical differences between adults and children, and the implications for provision of first aid
  • normal clinical values for children
  • physiology relating to response/consciousness
  • symptoms and triggers of anaphylaxis
  • symptoms and triggers of asthma
  • upper airway anatomy and effect of positional change.
